Dear participant,
The last few days have been very particular for us as organizers. Last week, we were confronted with the surprise legislative elections that were announced in France. The first round of the parliamentary elections will take place on Sunday 30 June, the initial date of the Marmotte Granfondo Alpes for which you are registered.
To ensure the safety of all our cyclists, sections of the Marmotte route are closed to motorized traffic every year. The elections are disrupting these arrangements, which would prevent many French people from exercising their right to vote.
Since the beginning of last week, our organization has been in talks with all the concerned authorities (police forces, local authorities, first-aid workers, prefectures, etc.) to adapt the initial Marmotte plan so that it can take place.
As organizers and cycling enthusiasts, we are well aware of the effort you have made over the last few months to cross the finish line at the summit of Alpe d'Huez. Our priority has always been your safety and comfort. We have therefore worked with all the parties involved to minimize the impact of these elections on your participation while maximizing your safety.
Several scenarios were studied and many discussions took place in order to find the solution that would be the least restrictive but the safest possible for participants.
We have today received the agreement of all the Prefectures to hold the Marmotte Granfondo Alpes on Saturday 29 June, one day before the date originally planned. We are well aware of the constraints this may entail for you, the participants, especially given the long preparation you have put in over the last few months.
We deeply apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause some of you and are grateful for your understanding of this situation, which none of us could have foreseen a few days ago.
In view of the advancement of the event and to give you as much time as possible to collect your number, the end of number collection on Friday evening will be extended to 9pm and collection on Saturday morning will be brought forward to 5am to allow as many participants as possible to take the start.
We have also had discussions with representatives of the local tourism industry, which have asked all their services to be as flexible as possible with regard to any potential requests for changes to your bookings.
Participants in the Randonnée format and the Grimpée de l'Alpe will be contacted separately with the precise details of these events.
Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to all the authorities with whom we have been in contact, and in particular the three different Prefectures (Savoie, Isère, Haute-Alpes) with whom we have been working for many days to enable the Marmotte to be maintained despite this particular context. The particularity of the Marmotte is that it crosses 3 French departments, so the negotiations and exchanges were lengthy before coming to a conclusion.
