In English: Short question, since I might be one of the last dinosaurs rocking the original Elemnt: Does someone run it with VTM and have a theme they could share? I tried the commonly available ones, but the textures seem to be missing on the device, resulting in roads being drawn, but the remaining landscape staying white instead of gray. Thanks in advance!

Hi @ReeRuuRii ,

What do you expect to see on a b/w unit?
Until the end of last year I used my forced bolt1 theme on my bolt 1 which is basically screen wise the same as the elemnt.
This theme displays POI's and texture, but the only textures I use is for water and military area's.
It should be possible to extend that with some heavier or lighter shading and or patterns to mark forest for example pretty easily but on a b/w unit you run out of obvious/useful options pretty quickly too.
Maybe you already tried it, but you can find it at http://wahoomaps.higli.de/ wahhoMapsCreator-Maps > Sample Themes >VTM > VTM-Forced Bolt 1
I asked the only other person I know with an Elemnt but has not replied yet. I'm 95% sure this is what he used (on ACE now)

It's pretty easy to render other landuses, if you want simple things I might be able to help you out but no promises ;-) as these themes are also going the way of the dinosaurs :)

I had looked through Intyres gists, the WahooMapCreator repo, zenziwerken and BadmanBarista's stuff, but could not find a suitable config, they all looked terrible on the B/W device. In the meantime, I went through the readmes of your folders and found your themes, they are awesome! So yes, they seem to work on the original Elemnt (although mine is named V2 in Elemntary). I recently replaced the battery, so this device has plenty of life left. My girlfriend has the Bolt 2 and is very happy with the config from your folder, too!

With the roads rendering properly and not being criss-crossed by dashed white lines, this is sufficient without additional textures for me. If I ever feel in the mood for it, I now have working examples I can follow :)

Two minor remarks:

a) The ice-cream icon is not linked correctly for boltv1, causing it not to appear (xml points to icons/symbols/amenity/icecream.svg, file is in icons/symbols/food/ice_cream.svg). I would have swapped devices soon, too, if I had to live in a world without ice cream. There might be others, this is only annecdotal.
b) As someone living in the city, I was drowning in bench icons around here. I went with the icon used by the Bolt2 theme instead.

Thanks for your work in creating and providing the maps and themes! If you have any plans to move these themes to github some time, I can check a couple of more things and will happily contribute directly.

Good to hear you (and more importantly your girlfriend :)) like it!

a) The ice-cream icon is not linked correctly for boltv1,
It ain't a bug, it's a feature, I'm a diabetic!!
Unfortunately the last part is true but it's still a bug :) thanks!

I know about the bench "issue" as I live in a extremely crowded region myself too but themes are by definition very personal and surroundings based. Some on here wanted to have fuel station for example visible on the 20km scale which would 100% completely black out my screen but which seems to be an option in rural Germany. So by all means adapt it to your needs and preferences but no one theme will please all I think.

All is on GitHub already. As a matter of fact a guy named Henk (Intyre for you) was the "godfather" of the maps creator. But as it was Linux only and I'm on Windows I made my own (mostly) Windows version. Which in turn was picked up by Treee111 (the creator of this post). He made it usable for the masses.

I'm not very GitHub capable, I manage but half the time it has me baffled :).
The project is up there but mostly as a reference for others and primarily for me to have a back-up. So I don't recommend people to even try and get it running, but suggestions and/or PR's are welcome.

Also welche Karten, welches Theme usw.

@spclzd I doubt Google translate does justice to your questions, so sorry if this doesn't answer them correctly.
The custom maps, either mine or self generated, are identical for all devices. The theme'ing engine (VTM) has also not changed. For some reason Wahoo has put little information and poi's in there maps and switched to a very lightly modified version of the default mapsforge vtm theme.
So most certainly you can get the same results as you have now. Or put in an other way, I would not know a reason why not.
As theming is completely not my thing, I would welcome any work done on it. Mine for example really need some work.
I can not say anything about the quality of the screen on the Bolt/Roam 3 but I personally have no issues with it on the ACE.
If you can post the latest version of your theme I can try to make some screenshots to give you an idea.

Thanks for the feedback - Google translate seems to do a great job, I think everything I wanted to know is answered.

I haven't changed much since I postet my theme here. If you could take a few screenshots of both urban and rural areas, that would be very helpful.

Edit: The link in your post does not work for me so I found your theme an other way, but it turns out this was vtm-elemnt_RM_24-01-14.zip, just found out I already had vtm-elemnt_RM_25-02-01.zip. Don't know how big the differences are if any but just so you know

Market place. Apparently the theme does not show churches? There are two in this screenshot. Some people find churches great for orientation.

Thanks for the screenshots! Wow, that looks like the theme works well out of the box. I checked the large areas that are still white in the screenshots on OSM - that's a pedestrian zone that I'm not rendering explicitly at the moment. Displaying churches as landmarks is a good idea - I'll have a look at that in the next few days.

I will certainly make customizations specifically for v3 at some point. The first thing that would be easy to implement is to replace the colors represented by patterns in my theme with real hex colors and make better use of the v3 color space. Second thing could be to replace dotted lines (for unpaved paths and roads) with colored ones. But I need a v3 device myself to be able to test everything - and I'm not planning to buy one right now, although I'm tempted.

Yeah, I know they are stupid expensive. I was determined not to buy the ace at it's incredible 600 euro price, so I ordered it a day after it's release o_O

I can't imagine you don't already know, but you don't "need" a v3 device for theme development. You can use Cruiser on windows/mac/linux for that and there is another option too.
Just for the heck of it, same market place example in Cruiser using your 250201 theme:

Funny to see the stairs leading down to the royal burial chambers but not the actual church :)

And the same area in my theme:

The dashed red ways is my Wandrer integration (roads not traveled) and the pink/cyan ways are bicycle network routes.
As you can see it's not ideal. For example the scaling of poi's is way of compared to "on device" but it's a great tool to more quickly edit a theme.
If you don't have it already, you need version 4.0.2. which is the last to support vtm rendering and is not on the site anymore. Let me know if you want it..

I'm using Cruiser since the first days of my theming experiments. It's a great tool for developing individual theme elements. But as you say: the on device experience differs sometimes, so I like to do test rides with the theme on the actual device.

Besides, my passion for theme building isn't big enough to do it even if I don't get anything out of it myself. Therefore, I'll postpone making major adjustments to v3 until I've succumbed to the temptation to buy the roam v3. First thing I'll do then is look for the hex codes for all the colours the roam is able to display.

Let's see how long that takes 😆

Danke!

You can still do the same.
There are multiple sources for theme(s) like
https://github.com/zenziwerken/Bolt2-Mapsforge-VTM-Rendertheme (one of the first themes out there)
https://github.com/treee111/wahooMapsCreator/tree/develop/device_themes (somewhat older now)
Or my own try at a theme and several from other people here:
https://github.com/Ebe66/Windows-Wahoo-Map-Creator-Osmosis/tree/master/Themes/VTM
p.s. don't be fooled by the name, the VTM-Bolt and Roam 2/vtm-elemnt one works fine on v3 units.

There are more out there but most are variations on a theme (pun intended)

You can still just copy the theme files to the device like you used to.

Thank you Ebe, I already tried it yesterday to create the vtm-folder to:
maps\vtm-elemnt
and I moved "all" zensiwerken files into this new folder, restart... nothing happens.
Maybe it was my fault to do not copy the folders screenshots and icons. I will copy again everything :)
To make it easy for the newbies, I would create a new thread with a short manual in German and with your links if you agree. It is very hard to figure out what to do on 53 pages with a lot information about mapping just to get a different map colour ;)

EDIT: New try and worked like a charm! Fantastic, much better look. Thanks!

You won't get a German post/site from me ;) But the guide at the Zenziwerken site is (almost) literally 3 lines.
There is a, dated, but more extensive guide on treee111's site although it could be clearer here and there.
Congrats at getting it working again!

It was the first thing I tried, and it’s working fine on my Roam V3!

The only issue is that copying the files with the Android file manager usually takes 2–3 attempts, and the transfer is very slow.

New Juli maps for Europe including Russia and China are available for download on the OneDrive http://wahoomaps.higli.de/ If all goes well new routing will be added in a few days. I might change my mind but there will not be any new maps for other countries this time and for the foreseeable future. Why? Because creating these maps takes a considerable amount of time, which I don't mind, but as far as I know based on the I_downloaded_this file on the OneDrive other maps than then those mentioned are never or hardly ever downloaded. Request on the Telegram group https://t.me/+Mor244hPZw85YTVk are however welcome and if I can I will create them (in the same interval as always, I won't be creating maps of a region daily 😊) No big changes or additions to the maps this time, just regular updates.
