At the 1964 Summer Olympics he won a gold medal in the sprint and a silver in the 1000 m time trial, behind Belgian Patrick Sercu, but only by a tenth of a second.
In the semi-final of the 1968 Italian Championships in Varese, Pettenella forced Bianchetto into a standing start for one hour, three minutes and five seconds (a new world record) until he collapsed unconscious on the ground. He then lost to Beghetto in the final.
Pettenella hatte in Italien ein Patent auf die tropfenfoermigen,- aero kalt gepressten Rohre angemeldet, hat er dann 1982 an Ernesto C. veraeußert....
Und auch als erster in Italien eine Kollaboration mit
Shimano und ein G.S. Gruppo Sportivo - so Rennverein... bis heute... unter Ciclisti Dergano
