Hi, thank you for posting this I formation about the wolber spidel cycling team.
I'm positive it's a team wolber road bike but would like to know what you think.
The reference number on the bottom bracket is 030383.There is also a another number 57 stamped above..I think this might relate to the frame size.i have checked the frame size and it is 56cm centre to top.
I think it might have originally belonged to Graham Jones who rode for wolber in 1983.the bike was bought in northern England in 1988.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Good Morning!
Great to hear from you. This is indeed a team bike of the Wolber-Spidel team. It is also the original color, right? I have to research a bit again and look through the fotos. Maybe @puntom can help you, he is very much into that time and history. Are there any markings or letters on the top or seat tube? Marc Gomez told me that mostly the name or the initials were written on the frame with a pen.
57 is for sure the frame size...

Great found!!!

Did the pre-owner knew a bit more about the background? The frame was one of the lightest I ever hold in my hands...preserve that treasure.

You probably saw that picture already on Classical Lightweights right? The frame of Graham Jones could be something like 57ct. Marc Gomez had the same size.

030383 = 03.03.1983?

hi,

Thank you for getting back to me with this information and cool photo...it looks like the right size!.

All decals have been removed and no indication to i.d. the rider.do you know what the first two numbers 03 03 83 might mean?..

Iam going to get in touch with the people i bought it from today for a bit more info....they did say it was from an ex professional who was selling it around 1988.i think they mentioned Manchester.

tcheers,

james

all components are spidel....stronglight,simplex and super champion tubular rims. However, the breaks are Weinmann AG Carrera 400 which i think are not the original breaks.your right ,this is a very light bike.

Abseits der gummierten Einführhilfen, ist auch ein Bremszugeinsteller erkennbar, wie bei den ➡

Great!!! Keep us updated, for me it looks like the original color.

I think the framenumber is the date of the production day-month-year. Would also fit to your time frame right? 3rd. of March 1983.

Greets!

Hi all,

have just removed the forks and found some more stamped numbers as per photos. Its hard to see some but the it reads ..

75 .... think this the frame size in cm.

3 ... dont know what this relates to.

.F ... dont know what this relates to.

There is also the columbus symbol stamped.

Also picked up a bit of background history yesterday .The bike once belonged to warburtons bakery here in the uk.The guys i bought it from last week have informed me that the bike was sold to them in 1988 by a mr Ross warburton...he mention that he had bought it from an ex professional rider in the 80's.Obviously,this is a long time ago.

Hello Oldbikestuff, Hallo Radkamaraden!
Just back on this forum, after a long silence, what a good surprise, Graham'Wolberspidelbike!!!! : we allready have 3 on the forum, we will build a team soon...
I send you the frame number of mine (probably Christian Seznec'one, I did not try to met him now to have the confirm)..so the number is 26 02 82, and I also have a 62 above: remember that my frame is a 61x58, sized axe to axe of the tubes; your hypothesis on the size is smart.

I rode the WolberSpidel-exSeznec again this year, but only on dayly rides, no more travell around Europe (to afraid of being stoled) ...it has done 1225,7 km (it is what Strava counted for me) again in 2020,

I had to change my travelbike and I build around a "Daniel Salmon" frame bought for 35 euros a "new" touring bike:

so the second carrier of my WolberSpidel is finished now: I can start the restoration now!
I will send you the promised pictures of what I have as stickers on my frame: I need to find a good camera and a tripode. bis dann, tschüss, Iber

Hello Iber,

Thank you for this information and pictures and all the best with your restoration. Any pictures would be greatly appreciated .... especially the decals which i intend to reproduce. I have added a few photos of the Wolber Spidel team which might be useful as a reference. Did you see my photos of the fork steerer? . Have you checked your fork for any markings? .On my forks the markings are ....

57 ... frame size
35 ... think this is the frame build number
.F .I have no idea what this stands for

Regards,

james

Hi James,
Thanks a lot for the pictures: I was a 16teen years rider in 1983, I can remember very well this period!

No I didnot check the fork, as it was my touring bike since the summer 2020...I was just riding it...
you can see the picture of it in my first messages, it is in a very poor condition (but not worth as I found it..better as it runs, and I ran it more than 10 years long...): all the broken parts are conserved (except the wheels that were not the originals: I will need details on them as I think you have the right ones?) as I knew it was a very good bike when I get it, without imagine that it is probably the frame that finished 20th of the Tour de France 1983..

Seznec 20th of the Tour de France 1983 ( I was more a fan of Sean Kelly at that period: Celtic connection...I was touring/camping in S-W Ireland along the coast, 5 years ago with that bike..)

here a picture of Seznec:

Hi Iber,
The wheels are Wolber super champion 32 spoke rims on Spidel/Maillard 700 heliomatic hubs.have added a picture.
Regards,
James

Ps.I raced in Ireland throughout the 1980's and remember kelly and Roche well...great memories. The black and white photo is me ,at the front in the 1984 tour of ireland.Moved to UK in 1988 and have been here since..thinking of heading back now due to B....t!.

Hi all,

Found this old photo of a Wolber-Spidel bike and noticed a small dent to the seat tube, which corresponds to a similar dent in photo 1...highlighted in blue. When i bought this bike i was disappointed to see the the damage and was going to get it taken but i think i should leave it now as helps I.D. this bike. What do you think?.I intend to get a paint restoration/touch up and not a respray early new year....Thinking of using Cyclomondo to reproduce the decals.

Happy new year too all,

James

The wheels on my bike are exactly the same. Would love to have the decals too, so I can start the restauration. Nice find with the picture of the dent. Best regards and a happy new year!

A picture taken from the same perspective and showing more of the frame would help to see and measure, if it's really the same bike.
The dent on the right picture looks bigger, maybe there was already a small repair?
BR and Happy New Year!

Toller Beitrag, vielen Dank.... Von der Vélo_Renaissance

Hi,
Yes, its difficult to workout the extent of the dent in the original black and white photograph....Part of the seat tube is in shade(the sun is to the left of the photo) so only half of the dent is visable in this photo.I will try and take a photo under similar sunny weather conditions...not too much sun here at the moment!. Proportionally, the dent is in the same position on the seat tube and has a similar oblique angle, which i have worked out to scale and with a protractor to measure the angle.
What i do know is it is a Wolber-Spidel team bike thanks to the input from some knowledgeable folk on this forum .For me,part of the fun of a restoration is following the history and see where you end up.My dilemma now is,should i get the dent removed during the frame restoration or leave it as a form of I.D.

All the best and Happy new year,

James
