Marco Polo Cycling Team rider Fuyu Li signs with Discovery Channel
Marco Polo Cycling Team rider Fuyu Li signed a contract for 2007 with the Discovery Channel team. This makes him the first Chinese to race at Pro Tour level.
Fuyu Li won the golden medal at the China Games last year, won the Tour of Thailand, the GP Westfalen in Germany and Halen in Belgium. His strong performance was observed by the Discovery Channel Team.
Fuyu has proven that he is a strong rider, has had some impressive results and we are excited to have him as a member of our Team, said manager Johan Bruyneel.
He will certainly need some time to get used to the speed and style of racing but I will design a program that allows him to be successful. I am sure he will adapt quickly.
His transfer was made possible through Marco Polo Cycling Team and Trek contacts.
It is a major step forward for Chinese cycling and will give Fuyu the best possible preparation for the Beijing Olympics 2008.
Fuyu Li himself is thrilled to represent the team: I am so very happy that Johan has selected me to be a part of the Discovery Channel Team. This is a dream come true for me and I am excited to be the first Chinese rider to race at this elite level.
Congratulations go out to Fuyu and we wish him the best of luck. MPC will continue to help Fuyu to arrange his European set-up next year.

Yellow jersey in Tour of Indonesia
The Marco Polo Cycling Team raced good in the Tour d Indonesia with support from Indonesian sponsor Greenfields fresh milk. Our sprinter, Russian rocket Sergey Kudentsov won two stages and had the yellow jersey. But lost it to... his teammate Jamsran Ulzii-Orshikh (Oggi) from Mongolia! At the end Oggi was 6th overall. And Sergey became 2nd in the points classification. With good support of their teammates, Eddy Hollands, Rhys Pollock and Chi Yin Leung and teammanager Frans van Slagmaat, mechanic Anton van Grinsven and local Indonesian staff.

2nd and 4th places in Tour of Qinghai Lake
The Marco Polo Cycling Team had some good results in stages in the Tour of Qinghai Lake, a race in the highest category in Asia. This year the competition was even with Pro Tour teams, Liquigas and Bouygues Telekom. Oggi showed that he still can sprint with a 5th place in a mass sprint. Rhys Pollock rode very strong in break-aways but only got a 4th place out of it. And Thomas Rabou had a good attack that lead him to a 2nd place.

Several victories in Europe
The Marco Polo Cycling Team rode also strong in Europe. There were victories from Sergey Kudentsov in Finland and in Norg, the Netherlands. Fuyu Li won the GP Westfalen in Dortmund, Germany and Halen in Belgium. Eddy Hollands won in Pijnacker, the Netherlands. Thomas Rabou had several podium placings and some victories in Belgium one of them the overall GC in the Spar Ardennen Challenge. And the team won the team classification in the Classic, Romsee-Stavelot-Romsee in Belgium.

Marco Polo Cycling Fund: Ethiopia
In October last year Peter Winnen and Frans van Slagmaat had a very good experience in training the Ethiopian selection and the regional coaches. The Ethiopian Federation was very satisfied with the approach of the Dutch experts and with the results. So nobody in the Marco Polo Cycling family was surprised that a new request came in soon.
Peter and Frans did not hesitate to look for an opportunity to go again. They also were very pleased by the way the riders in Ethiopia tried to improve their skills and their eagerness to learn.
Their second trip to Ethiopia was from May 15 until 23. After a press conference in Addis Ababa they went to Awassa, 260 km south from the capital. They were welcomed by the board members and officials of the Federation and by 24 riders and 8 coaches.
The local coach showed a tremendous devotion to the sport: he trains daily at 6.00 in the morning about 25 schoolboys and girls. They train on mountain bikes provided by the sport committee. He makes perfect individual oriented training schemes for them and he carefully monitors their progress. It is really a pity that there are nearly no opportunities for doing races and that they have a big lack of race material. Nevertheless the youngsters showed in their races, on Sunday, that they are very motivated and enthusiastic.
In 5 other cities are projects with the same idea.
The trainees came from different regions, some had 3 days travelling behind them!
The training week was planned around two races. Peter showed and practised how to focus on a race, how to plan the training. Also the importance of recovery was an item.
Due to the pleasant interactive way there was from the first moment a very good climat for learning. Theory and practice were in a good balance.
The races, one roadrace of 120 k’s in a hilly area and a criterium of 80 k’s, showed how much talent there is.
For instance the winner of the road race rode an average of 42 k per hour! And this happened under very remarkable and extreme circumstances: nearly no safety measures and lots and lots of all kind of animals on the road. Unpredictable behaviour of users of the same road who had not any idea of what riders on a race bike intend, gave extra tension and sometimes excitement.
The last day, Sunday 22, the city centre was the place to be: lots of spectators, some sitting in the trees, saw very interesting races for the schoolboys and girls and the elite criterium.
Peter and Frans could conclude that their efforts formed a valuable contribution to cycling in Ethiopia. They also concluded again that real and continuous progress asks for a structural approach, for sponsors and for competition.
Marco Polo Cycling Foundation sees a good challenge in working on these questions.
